About the conflict between the riders and the Deliveroo or Glovo transport platforms.

One of the most frequently reported news about digital platforms in the media and public debate is the conflict between’riders’ (cyclists who collect and deliver orders for food or other goods) and the platforms where end users place such orders, such as Deliveroo or Glovo, but also Amazon or Just Eat.

The basis of the conflict is whether these’riders’ are freelancers, as the conditions of use between the parties say, or are in fact false independent workers, since they are in fact salaried workers but where the platforms do not bear the economic cost of their labour rights because they are’outsourced’.

In this sense, for example, in Spain we find that administrative bodies -not judicial- such as the Labour Inspectorate, affirm that in the case of Deliveroo these are false independent workers, in the absence of the appeals that this platform has filed, and of future judicial decisions.

The way in which these conflicts are resolved will be of great relevance in the future of collaborative economics digital platforms and their business models.
