One of the main tourist cities in Europe, Palma de Mallorca, has decided to ban short term rentals in residential buildings. The aim of this measure is to combat the increase in the number of unregistered tourist dwellings and the increase in the price of housing, as well as to improve social coexistence in neighbourhoods and reduce’any significant effects on the environment, territory, energy resources, water, infrastructure and roads’.

In addition to this ban, the Government of the Balearic Islands imposed a fine of €300,000 last February on the digital platform Airbnb for advertising unlicensed flats on its website. In this way Mallorca is taking drastic measures against tourist rentals, similar to what other cities such as Berlin or San Francisco have already done and as other European cities are considering.
